The latest data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that breast augmentation surgery remains the number one procedure, with respect to the number of surgery operations performed in the U.S. in 2012. Breast augmentation is the enlargement of breast size usually through the use of implants. At a total of 286,000 augmentation operations undertaken, the 2012 figure is actually a 7 percent decline compared to 2011 statistics. But then again, it is still the numero uno plastic surgery all over America! The popularity, however, has a dark corner: several augmentation patients have experienced post-surgery complications that in some cases require surgical revision.
Some of the possible Augmentation Complications include:
Breast Implant Malposition or Asymmetry
Capsular Contracture
Loss of Cleavage Between Implants (Synmastia)
Implant Deflation/Implant Rapture
Implant Rippling/Wrinkling
Indeed, there are quite a number of complications that may be experienced after a breast implant surgery. Each complication requires a specific surgery tact to fix it. Some complications may be due to simple miscommunication between the surgeon and patient, like when the patient would want a bit of a reduction in size because the previous breast enlargement made her breasts too big or looking unnatural for her body frame. Other complications may be due to uncontrollable skin tissue infections, like what happens during Capsular Contracture wherein an inappropriate amount of scar tissue around a breast implant causes unsightly and uncomfortable firmness of the breast. Nevertheless, in many instances of breast augmentation complications, the plastic surgeon is either partly or completely to blame. The surgeon was perhaps inaccurate, less experienced to perform augmentation surgery, or failed to communicate clearly with the patient.
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. York Yates has excellent understanding on the importance of communication in achieving patient’s aesthetic desires.
